Engineered glass for exceptional sound reduction

Tischler und Sohn product lines are uniquely suited to target and achieve specific sound reduction needs. We work closely with sound engineers to develop multi-paned, insulated windows and doors, all without compromising on design and functionality.

Combined with customizable sash thickness and multipoint locking mechanisms, Tischler und Sohn offers a full range of products to meet our customers’ sound performance needs.

Measuring Sound Reduction

Sound is transmitted through airborne vibrations and measured in decibels across various frequencies that are perceptible to the human ear. In residential construction, sound reduction is measured by two benchmark standards:

    • STC- Sound Transmission Class, focusing on a noise spectrum generally targeting human speech sounds. The higher the rating, the lower the sound penetration.
    • OITC – Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class, is a standard used to indicate the rate of sound transmission from outdoor noise sources into a building.

Both measures can be valuable when evaluating specific targets of sound reduction for project needs. When it comes to windows, the average dual pane unit has an STC rating of around 27-28. As a system, Tischler und Sohn’s wood product, with our standard low-E insulated glass, performs with an STC rating of approximately 35, well above industry standards.

Custom Sound Engineering –  A Case Study

CLIENT CONCERN:

A NYC homeowner was frustrated by the constant sound of musical street performers near their residence, specifically a saxophone.

SOLUTION:

With the collaboration of a sound engineer, the level and frequency of the sound inside the residence was monitored and recorded.

With thorough lab testing, Tischler designed a specific solution- customizing the glass, frame and sash to block the instrument’s sound frequencies.

The following video is from inside the test chamber during our mock up testing.
